If there's one word that sums up the music of Cyborg Attack it's 'bombastic'. I don't think I've ever heard a band whose beats hammer away with such enthusiastic abandon as those that make up the vast majority of this, their second album. What stops this from being a totally uncompromising listen is the highly melodic feel that accompanies the harder elements, most noticeably on the surprisingly infectious opening title track which stomps along quite exhuberantly while the sampled guitar that heralds the beginning of "Psycho-X' adds a definate punky feel that it would be good to see the band incorporate more widely. This is actually one of the few times the band shop any kind of inventiveness in the sounds used as, otherwise, it's all done in a pretty straighforward, no-fuss manner while the narrow selection of sounds that they resort to does mean it does get a bit samey, even predictable, at times but when faced with such an irresistably massive sound it's impossible not to be swept up by the musical hurricane that is unleashed by "Alptraum Leben", "Blutrausch" (with the manic laughing proving another nice touch!) "Trauma" & "Verlierer", to name just a few. For all that it's actually an incredibly easy, albeit exciting, listen that's reminiscent of Project Pitchfork circa "Lam' Bras" in places; an approach that, to my mind, makes this album almost the EBM equivalent of an easy holiday read, if you follow my drift! True, there are a few tracks which take their foot off the pedal with "E.N.D.Z.E.I.T., the instrumental "Judgement Day" & "Blasphemie" foremost among them while a few others, such as "Hammer Smashed Face" & "Daemon" alternate between the two with the latter track being the only real let-down, it just doesn't seem to 'gel' somehow. Still, one out of thirteen is good going by anyone's standards & its many strengths are more than enough reason to give this a big thumbs up! |
