Inertia have become a much-loved staple of the British electro scene & this 'best of' celebrates 10 years of music making. Their whole back catalogue gets a look in, from the days of the "Infiltrator" EP back in 1995 & the "Programmed To Respond" album (neither of which are deleted I don't think & which are so heavily represented it's hardly worth buying them!) right up to the last album "Black Ice Impact" & even a Funker Vogt remix from the "Positive Angel" release which Gerrit Thomas didn't work too hard on, it seems! Despite the fact that the tracks are not compiled chronologically it's still evident that Inertia's music has become a good deal more commercial as time has progressed, not only in the case of the poppy "Fly" (which is credited to the wrong album on the sleevenotes-doh!) & singalong Bollywood fave "Shakalaka Baby" but even in the newer EBM tracks such as "Blank Stare" & the slower "Black Ice Impact". The recognisable Inertia stamp, however, remains present & correct throughout, even on the "Infiltrator" material which means they've constantly been broadening their musical horizons, as any good band should-it's unlikely they'd have survived ten years if they'd done otherwise. In fact the only real moan is the lack of any unreleased material (even something from the archives or one of their rare cover version would have sufficed) which means that while hardcore Inertia fans will still snap this up any newcomers or more casual fans are now unlikely to consider buying anything before "Negative Prime" & while this is a worthwhile purchase for both groups of people I only hope the sales of the earlier releases don't suffer as a result. |
