Two of Accession's harder EBM bands join forces (sort of) on this double single package. As far as concepts go it's not one of the more exciting (although the fact that both bands remix the other does at least pertain to the concept well enough) but, at the end of the day, you do get more music for your money this way & that's never a bad thing, is it? It's sobering thought how quickly (:SITD:) have gone from being the bright new hope to a pretty predictable band. Their 'Kreuz:gang' is a case in point as the title track bears a very strong resemblance to 'Richfest' (although the remixes from Rotersand & Angels &Agony should ensure it gets appropriate club support!) & although the typically anthemic & atmospheric chorus does get under your skin quite quickly it would be far better served by a more expressive vocal performance from Carsten Jacek (the sort which worked so well on Rose Coloured Skies). This lack is even more noticeable during 'Atonement' where the deep synth lines are choc-full of potential & are well worth hearing but if only the vocals had done them justice then we'd be talking a classic here. 'Metamorphosis' sees the band exploring a somewhat 'funkier' style which is a bit of a change although it's still pretty obvious who you're listening to! So, not exactly a classic then, here's hoping the forthcoming album sees the band reaching out & expanding their sound to some extent. Similarly, Painbastard's 'Nyctophobia' acts as a frustrating taster for what Alex P is really capable of, especially when there are only two new tracks on offer here (although the remixes are a pretty varied bunch, ranging from the accoustic-flavoured electro/pop of 'Torn' as remixed by Diorama to the ultra-danceable verson of the title track that Straftanz contribute) & while 'Nyctophobia' builds up a nicely dramatic edge of steam it feels a bit too long at over 7 minutes & starts to plod a bit towards the end. Luckily the dynamically infectious & extremely danceable 'Psychological Disintergration' (try asking your DJ for this one after you've had a few!) improves things a great deal & proves to be the overall highlight. I think it's fair to say that this package is aimed at hardcore fans rather than the newcomers so if you're the latter, you'll do far better checking out either bands' albums & working from there. |
