Having been quite impressed by this Australian duo's material to date I was intrigued at what might be on offer on this EP, which I guess, could be seen as an extension to, rather than a follow-up to, their debut album Open Aeon. A quick scan of the back cover reveals a somewhat disappointing remix/original ratio of 7:1 & while the new track 'Castrated' is a good demonstration of their dark, melodic electro style (which reminds me more of Dismantled the more I listen to it) it's not really enough to recommend to anyone unfamiliar with the Empty sound (best stick with the album for that). Having said that, the assembled remixers do provide some reasonable reinterpretations of their allotted tracks, starting with Disharmony (the only one I'd previously heard of) who turn in a nicely laidback version of 'Alone' while Zintek give greater emphasis to some effective guitar riffs on their version of 'Castrated'. Throughout the mixes are more of the thoughtful variety although both Process Void & Searad do turn in nicely full-sounding versions of 'Torn' which work pretty well & the disc ends on a more dancey note courtesy of another mix of 'Castrated' from In-Tranzit. It's an odd little release, this & I'm not sure what it's for as the lack of original material isn't likely to provide the curious as to whether the album is worth buying while the lack of established remixers means that even this method of exposure is closed to them; the album's still worth a go, though, so check that out & if you like that then this might be a more worthwhile proposition.
