I'm not too keen on a band calling themselves Funeral, without any sense of humour, irony or taste whatsoever. When I hear the growly, turgid vocals then I know they're actually being serious. I'm not a fan of funerals as a rule, with them being an ultimately shocking, inadequate, and futile way of summing up someone's life in half and hour, before burying them in a hole in the ground and chucking earth on top. The End.
And I thought Goth was all about celebrating life, really, through the negatives that do tend to go with living in reality. I'm sorry to take umbrage over something like a band name before even commenting on the music, but this name does need to be reviewed as it were by the band. I can't imagine I'm the only over-sensitive funeral-phobe circulating the Goth contingent. And imagine answering some gorgeous bloke's/girl's question of "What music do you listen to?" with "Urrgggh, Funeral..." Enough said. And funerals always bring to mind how short life really is. Too short to get all depressed and start making a din like this. Let alone be the one listening to it! I'm not suggesting a cover of "The Birdie Song" by any means, but ... think. I'm sorry to come over all Simon Cowell, but this is turgid, and the band name is just the beginning of it. And the end. They score two for making some effort with the CD cover, and the fact that the CD is brief. |
