Yes, The Damned have got a new album out, let it be known. Their first release since 2001's Grave Disorder. The punk veterans are back with a vengeance and to mark the occasion have taken over the Islington Academy for the night. It's surprisingly full, with a good mix of old punk stalwarts, newbie Goth-ettes and those who thought it was better than staying in on a Wednesday night with a packet of Pringles and rubbish TV.

To kick things off, it's a track from their 1985 heyday, "There'll Come A Day", nicely warming up proceedings, followed by an old punk favourite, "One Of The Two". They're bucking expectations by not dominating the whole evening with new material – which is good, actually. The songs from their new album – "Under The Wheels", "Dr Woofenstein", "Diamonds", "Dark Asteroid" – are mixed in between their old favourites and crowd pleasers, not over-loading those determined to stay in the past, or alienate any newbies. They've not had a top-20 hit for 22 years, you know – but they are a band with a loyal cult following and a musical history that not many could follow. That they inspire such a favourable reaction from the crowd is testament to how well-loved they are – and what potential the future may have for them. Lead singer Dave Vanian is even forgiven for forgetting most of the lyrics to "Dark Asteroid"– he is obviously having a 'Who am I again? Who's this band I'm on-stage with?' moment.

Vanian bears an uncanny resemblance to horror legend Vincent Price nowadays, and has a penchant for really quite high-waisted trousers and braces, obviously rocking the vintage look, which does suit (you sir). Captain Sensible indulges himself with a few bars of "Happy Talk", provoking cheers and boos in equal measure. Still obviously firing on all cylinders, The Damned still fizz and sparkle with fire and dynamism. Good on 'em!
