Its good to hear some new material from Hard Wired faves, Action Directe. This Leeds based Industrial Punk outfit have never caused us any doubt as to their musical ability, and this new EP once again cements their high standing in the Alternative UK music scene. Like a bullet from a gun, the opening track, Better Dead Than Red is a raucous, smack-you-in-the-face tour de force that takes no prisoners with its post apocalyptic punk style. The fusion of this sound with an Industrial framework works well, and this is ADs strength. This track will fill a dance floor with moshers, no questions asked. Still carrying its political feelings on its sleeve, Spirit of 89 is a look back at the fall of the Berlin wall. Guitars and crashing drums lead the assault here, with the harsh male vocals at he front of the charge. Good stuff indeed! The final track, Official Hooligans is a side swipe at the September 11th attacks, and the reactions that followed. Again, this track follows the formula of the preceding two, albeit a little less in your face. In all, this is a pleasing release from a band that clearly know what theyre doing. The punk elements conjure up memories of a musical era long gone now, but this is a modern twist to a worn out genre, and it works so well. There is a slight un-polished feeling to the music, that might give it an amateurish edge occasionally, but that to me makes AD so appealing. The music is honest! (I so want to see this band signed to a label, and get the backing they deserve.) This is only a pre-cursor to their new album, due in the summer, and this reviewer cannot wait for it, if this taster is anything to go by. Bring it! |
