This self-released split CD brings together the music of Ben P alias Revolution State & Bonnie P alias Noizekatt. Each act contribute 5 tracks of intelligent melodic IDM that straddles the line between accessability & more abstract styles with a strong political agenda. Despite the word 'hate' appearing in two of the Revolution State tracks the music isn't particularly aggressive, in fact, some of the melodic motifs feel positively laidback, even ambient in the case of 'My Other Heartbeat', although the inventive rhythmic treatments add a more abrasive edge, as do the whispered/looped vocal effects that form an extra musical layer on 'Deny' while the importance of the human feel that Bonnie's should not be underestimated, either. There's a noticeably more assertive edge to the Noizekatt tracks with 'K@t' being a slice of hard-hitting powernoise while the refrain of 'fuck you' on 'Eco-Terror' is sure to grab the attention. The spoken vocals bear a strong resemblance to Sina Hubner, particularly on 'Minus Hope' & 'Left Hand', both of which boast a greater melodic presence to make these easily the most accessable tracks on offer which fans of Noisex & the like should certainly find appealing. Overall, though, this is the perfect combination of the experimental & the accessable & even in it's harshest moments, it shouldn't prove too heavy going for anyone except the most commercial music lover. That the duo have since signed to the Vendetta label means it's odds-on we'll be hearing a lot more from them in future but, for now, this is a good first effort that all lovers of IDM, noise & the more imaginative end of electro would do well to check out. |
