Holding back slightly off the beat just like good music is meant to are The Circuits, who kick off their album Bright As Midnight with "City of Lights", which contains echoes of Iggy's "The Passenger" and The Clash. It's got that sort of clean untampered sound that is as wholesome as green tea, Ryvita and mung beans. It's a consistent chilled-out laid-back indie type thing.
"Exit Strategy" describes the urge of trying to get out of the daily workaday grind the compromise of personal dreams and ambitions to earn a crust and 'play the game': 'And I want my life back/But when you win the rat race you're still a first place rat.' Yes, go get a camper van, put your life in it and trek around the country for a while. I know I'm tempted and you could listen to this while you're doing so. Just don't forget the Primus, Wet Wipes and Linda McCartney sausages. Oh, and make sure your co-driver has a valid driving licence and no smuggling offences. And if you survive two weeks of living together in a space 10 feet by 2.5, you know you're onto a winner. "A Thousand Ideas" is a really pleasant love song of sorts, 'I'm like a mirror she's like a window' one's easily broken and the other is transparent and see through, or something, I don't know. It's quite pleasant, summertime rock, blast this out of your camper van window Withnail & I stylee as you trail up the Welsh mountains or the Pennines, just mind the sheep. Baaaaaaaaaa!
