It starts so peacefully with "In Pieces" – a melodic piano, a pretty tune... and then my senses are assaulted and I wonder whether I should book myself into an old person's rest home when "The Revenge" starts. Ugghhh. Not sure if I like this thrashy stuff – it's a bit samey and just like every other Emo sound to spawn from somone's PA. Anyway, onwards and upwards. Just flicking through to find a song which doesn't start in the same key as the one before it... and I've come to "Witch Hunting", which sounds like a hate song to the press. Fair enough. There's some scary-sounding thunder for "Phantoms" and more thrashy drums, and a welcome surprise – a violin. Actually, this one's pretty good. It makes me think of 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' for some reason. And then there's some calm and relative tranquillity "Ashes and Embers" after the hard-core thrash of "Dansylvanian" and "Good Evening", oh, and more thrashy stuff for "Before the Storm".
"We All Went Out To Sea" sounds just like the song before it, and "At Peace" really isn't. I know this review sounds harsh, but I feel like I should be fifteen years younger, just discovering Manic Panic hair dye, and desperate to hack my parents off with some loud, hormonal rawk before I could listen to this for pleasure. But it's not bad, taken for what it actually is, and if I was the fifteen-year old reprobate of yore, I'd probably like it. So there.
