And So It Begins. Which is exactly what I said to myself as I popped this into the CD player, as usual thinking myself far more amusing than I actually am. Expecting some death metal or trad-revival stuff to pour forth, I found instead a curious mix of early Metallica and Di-anno-era Iron Maiden, though with a few hard rock influences and cheesy choruses on a number of the tracks. Happily though these little indiscretions can be overlooked as the music is for the most part pretty good.
The odd thing is that it doesn't really sound like much of the music being played today - it really has the groovy but stripped-down feel of early Metallica and (very) early Maiden. I don't have a picture of the band but after just a few tracks I'm starting to suspect they wear torn denims - with patches of course.
And so it carries on, chugging happily away, groovy guitar licks generously provided, along with a few choice exclamations of "Yow!" by the singer (you need to know your New Wave British Heavy Metal to understand) and some decent changes of pace. There are also a number of minor acoustic interludes which are a pleasant enough diversion.
This stands out fairly well from the crowd these days, without being overtly original, and is well worth a listen.
