Foretaste are back with a follow-up to 2005's Beautiful Creatures with another fine album that proves synthpop is alive & well in France. The duo of Terrorist XX & Terrorist XY (such monikers seem better suited to an EBM band than a synthpop duo but never mind) bring the usual gallic flair to the 13 tracks within, particularly XX's vocals which are as husky & as mouthwateringly exotic as ever, so much so that here she could almost be the reincarnation of Edith Piaf! For sure, such a voice should belong to an ageing chanteuse ruminating on the bitterness of life & love but instead it belongs to a drop-dead gorgeous singer who co-produces some excellent synthpop, how brilliant is that? Answer: very, particularly during 'The Prototype Of Love' where she seduces the coldest of hearts just by the way she pronounces 'prototype' &, given that this is a stunner of a track all round then you know you're onto a good thing here. But while her voice is without doubt the band's biggest asset, XY's melodic contribution should not be overlooked, particularly the haunting chords that make 'No Remorse' so full of regret & sadness that it's impossible not to be moved & while I'm sure there's a touch of 70s Europop in the melodic work of 'Keep Me Satisfied' it's another excellent track the offbeat. As the album nears its conclusion, the offbeat, if brief at just over a minute, instrumental break 'Virgin Concept' offers a nice diversion before the punchy & totally infectious closer 'Ego' again ups the tempo in fine style. There's no doubt that, had this track been created in the 80s it would have been regarded as a classic by now so don't let its relative unfamiliarity prevent you from giving it the acclaim it deserves. When describing the Foretaste sound, people have been quick to liken them to Client & Goldfrapp but, for me, this duo outstrip any of these well-loved acts in terms of sensuality & all-round excellent songs; this duo deserve to be massive & it will be a crying shame if they don't go on to better the achievements of these aforementioned acts so make sure this doesn't happen & check out this excellent album pronto.
