Digging down deeply into the depths of the honourable Sir John Peel's many hallowed radio sessions, someone came across this bunch of gems. Today, I feel truly honoured to have this promo copy of Gary Numan's Peel Sessions in my lap. I'm even taking my head out of the gas oven from my latest spurning, and life feels good again. I'm smiling!
"Down In The Park" is refreshingly basic; the Numan synth sound we all know and love. There's no real way of criticising something that has stood the test of time, unlike anything else that came before. The obligatory "Cars" comes in with an 'Encounters of the Third Kind' synth invasion – not the polished version most of us know and love. And it rears its head again later, with a squelchy-sounding bass and heavy on the drums. The knarled sound of "Conversation" brings back 80s flashbacks, and without "RIP" you know there would never have been a Marilyn Manson. And obviously, without "Are 'Friends' Electric" (notable omission) there would never have been that fantastic "Freak Like Me" by Sugababes. Enough idle chatter! It's fantastic, well what do you expect from Gary Numan anyway? You should buy it just because it's going to be better than Mika's next churn out. Who else wants to kill the man who sounds like Miss Piggy?? |
